Fitness has always been one of the most commonly mentioned forms of exercise among university students. On campuses, students have made new commitments to their health and well-being.

The increase in the number of university students participating in physical activities can be attributed to various factors, including increased awareness of the importance of fitness, the pursuit of a balanced lifestyle, stress reduction, and the influence of social media.

Fitness instructor and Simple 12 founder Elson Dieh illustrates the driving force behind the fitness craze.

Dieh said: "The fitness fever of college students today can be attributed to several factors. First of all, in recent years, people's awareness of the importance of physical health and happiness has been increasing, leading students to put fitness first. Moreover, the desire for a balanced lifestyle, stress reduction and improved mental health are also drivers.”

University life often causes a lot of pressure to students. Participating in fitness activities has become an effective way out for many people to find comfort and improve their mental health.

Dieh added: "Fitness activities are a way to reduce stress and provide a platform for students to direct their energy in a positive way. By integrating exercise into their daily activities, students are able to experience the physical and mental benefits that contribute to their overall health.”

Social media plays an important role in shaping the undergraduate fitness habits. Platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and fitness apps allow easy access to a wealth of fitness-related content, exercise programs and healthy living tips.

These digital platforms create communities in which students can find inspiration, motivation, and support for like-minded people on fitness tips.

Dieh acknowledged the impact of social media, noting: " Social media has had a significant impact on college students' fitness habits. It provides easy access to fitness information, exercise procedures, and secrets to healthy living, which is beneficial for those seeking guidance.

It also allows individuals to find communities and support systems with similar fitness goals, thereby fostering motivation and responsibility.”

Alex Zhao, a Taylor’s College student who has been working on his fitness for years, highlighted the various motivations and challenges students face in maintaining their fitness habits.

Zhao shared: "I think the motivation to join the fitness craze in college and put health and fitness first varies from person to person.

Some common motivations may include a desire for overall health, stress reduction, weight management, improved appearance or being affected by friends and peers who are already involved in fitness activities.”

Zhao further stressed, "Due to time constraints, academic stress and other commitments, I may face challenges in maintaining my fitness habits.

Overcoming these barriers may include prioritizing and scheduling time for exercise, finding time-saving exercise options, using campus fitness facilities, incorporating exercise into daily activities (e. g., walking or cycling to classes), and gaining support from friends or the fitness community.”

The fitness boom not only affects personal happiness, but also affects the social life and interpersonal relationships of college students. Participating in fitness activities provides the opportunity to socialize and communicate with like-minded people through fitness classes, group workouts, or sports teams.

As the fitness boom continues to grow among college students, it is important to examine its overall impact. While prioritizing fitness has undeniable physical, psychological, and social benefits, it is essential for individuals to treat it in a balanced and sustainable way.

Setting realistic goals, avoiding extreme or unhealthy behaviors, and focusing on personal health are key factors in ensuring that the fitness boom maintains a positive trend.
