Japanese video game company Nintendo launched their highly-anticipated open-world game on 12 May, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Nintendo Switch exclusive hit the shelves and online markets with an expanded open world, numerous improvements and fresh gameplay mechanics that were lauded by critics and casual gamers alike.

Debuting with a 96/100 on the review aggregator, Metacritic, the latest installment within the Zelda franchise is already proving that it can fill the massive shoes of its predecessor, Breath of the Wild.

GameSpot writer Steve Watts says, “While this newest entry in the Zelda franchise is most recognizably similar to that 2017 game, it builds upon the foundation so thoroughly and transformationally that it feels like a revelation. Not everything is exactly the same or where you'd expect it to be, and the map is marked with myriad opportunities for exploration and curiosity."

Since release, the game has been streamed and watched a great deal, with the game accruing more than 100,000 concurrent viewers on the popular streaming platform, Twitch.

“It’s one of the most anticipated games in recent years so many streamers will probably try to capitalize on that massive interest,” says local Twitch streamer, Danny Tan.

“It’s a shame that it’s only available on the Switch console though, so many interested gamers might not be able to experience it, but it will sure be an enjoyable few weeks for those who can,” added Danny, who has gone on to stream more than 40 hours of the game through his Twitch channel.

The game has also received praise on Twitter, with a user claiming that the game could very well be on its way to receiving the Game of the Year Award.

Upon release, local game cafe ATO hosted a launch party for the game where Malaysian fans got the chance to try the game out, enjoy Zelda-themed food, and take pictures with a Link (the protagonist) cosplayer.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can be purchased for RM 239 from most video game retailers. The limited special edition Zelda-themed console can also be purchased at RM 1,616 from GameShop Malaysia.
