Taylor’s Speaker’s Corner came together with “In Days of Strays” to host an online pet showcase on 11 June.

The Zoom session was also graced with the company of Malaysia Independent Animal Rescue (MIAR).

“The main goal of the showcase was to have pet owners showcase their pets, raise awareness on the importance of adoption and how we as a community can give the animals a better home,” says Diamond, the Events Director of Taylor’s Speaker’s Corner.

Owners were encouraged to show their pets on camera, and share their journeys in addition to how they came to be with those pets.

The inspiration to host the event stemmed simply from the club members’ casual conversations regarding their pets at the clubs’ after-party sessions (when the event of the day ends).

“That’s when our advisor, Mr Dorian, got the inspiration to host a pet showcase and what better chance to educate people on adoption than this?” Diamond adds.

The presence of MIAR addresses the important message of why adoption is the better option, as compared to purchasing a pet.

According to Diamond, there is definitely a concerning increased amount of strays in Malaysia and over the past decade, MIAR has rescued over 1300 dogs that were suffering from abuse.

“So many strays are still in need of our help and thankfully for NGOs like MIAR, they represent a voice for these innocent strays and raise awareness on the mistreatment of these animals,” the passionate advocate adds.

The purchasing of pets essentially means supporting the industry of puppy or kitten mills where animals are used as reproducing machines and housed in terrible conditions, hence the clubs’ urge to advocate for adoption.

Many across the country are still unaware of the importance of adoption as they were never exposed to the cruelty of breeders, or made aware about the euthanization of strays to control overpopulation.

Diamond believes that more events like these should be held all over Malaysia, as people should be wary of the fact that there are other options to help, besides adoption.

“There are options like volunteering, donating food and money, or even just educating others. Little changes add up together can make a huge difference.”

If you are interested in adopting a furry friend, there are various adoption services and pet shelters across Malaysia like the SPCA, Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), Second Chance Animal Shelter, and of course the MIAR to name a few.
