PM Anwar leads delegation to ASEAN meeting, expresses stance on South China Sea, Middle East.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar led a delegation to the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and related meetings in Laos on Tuesday.The foreign ministry said the summits, which run from now until the 11th, will see the prime minister participating in the ASEAN Summit and attending the ASEAN+1 Summit with seven Dialogue Partner countries, including Australia, China, Japan, India, South Korea, the United States and Canada.


In addition, the Prime Minister will participate in the ASEAN+3 Summit, the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN-UN Summit. He will also attend the Zero Emissions Asia Community Leaders' Meeting and engage in dialogues with representatives of the ASEAN Parliamentary Union, the ASEAN Business Advisory Council and ASEAN Youth.

In a statement, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) noted that the ASEAN Summit and related meetings provided an opportunity for Malaysia to share its views on a number of regional and international issues and to exchange views with other member countries.


Discussions at the meeting included topics such as ASEAN Community Building, ASEAN Community Vision 2045, Regional Peace and Stability, Regional Economic Integration, Green Economy, Emerging Technologies, Energy Transformation, Food Security, and Timor-Leste's progress towards ASEAN membership. In addition, Malaysia will also reaffirm its position on the South China Sea issue, Myanmar, Palestine and the situation in the Middle East.


At the summit's closing ceremony, host country Laos will symbolically hand over the rotating chairmanship of ASEAN to Malaysia, which will officially become the rotating chair of ASEAN from January 1 next year. The Prime Minister is expected to deliver a short message at the ceremony outlining Malaysia's vision as ASEAN Chair.
