“That’s that me, espresso” you might have heard this song lyric before on the radio or perhaps in the background of one of your favorite TikTok videos or Instagram Reels. “Espresso” is a catchy, summer-filled tune that has taken over Billboard charts and has ultimately become the unofficial anthem of the season. Sung by none other than rising pop star Sabrina Carpenter, the American singer-songwriter has witnessed a skyrocketing success in her career for the past year. Despite having been in the music industry for more than a decade, why has it taken her so long to gain worldwide popularity?
Sabrina Carpenter first gained recognition as a Disney Channel star, having played the lead role in the comedy series, “Girl Meets World”. In April 2014, she released her debut EP “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying”, which received positive reception. With a strong broadway background, Carpenter has always been known for her vocals and “girl next door” persona.
Although she’s been in the public eye for some time, her rise to fame came with the song “Nonsense” from her fifth studio album, “Emails I Can’t Send”. During her tour in 2022, Carpenter began changing her song’s original outro lyrics from, "How quickly can you take your clothes off pop quiz?" to wittily reference the city or event where she was performing. On July 21, 2023, she took the stage at Malaysia's Good Vibes Festival, delivering her special outro as: “B!tch, I’m in Malaysia, it’s a world tour. Played it so good you don’t need an encore. Let me hear you scream Kuala Lumpur.”

Carpenter’s popularity further propelled when she opened for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras World Tour” in 2023. She then proceeded to release her critically acclaimed sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet” in August 2024. With her hit singles and captivating stage presence, it’s clear that Carpenter has cemented herself as this generation’s new “it girl.” After more than a decade in the industry, she’s finally stepping into the spotlight and earning the recognition she has long deserved.
