DAMANSARA, Selangor - Grab your drinks and popcorn! Taylor's University recently hosted a film showcase event at GSC @ The Starling Mall where the best films from its Taylor's University Film Festival 2024 line-up were shown to an audience.
It was a hectic but fun event for everyone involved as it was one of the biggest screenings that the committee had hosted since 2019. Many lecturers and students from the Taylor's University School of Media and Communications (SOMAC) as well as many from other schools and organisations such as the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS), CinemaOnline, ASWARA, UiTM, Sunway University and Multimedia University (MMU) came to support the budding filmmakers on this amazing night. Like the premiere of a blockbuster film, the cinema hall, provided by venue sponsor GSC, quickly filled up.
Many might have expected student-made films to be of amateur quality but the films shown in this screening showcased the talents of this generation, many of which were on-par with the industry standard as professional camerawork, post-production and acting were involved in all of the films. Even the film's plots were unique as all of the contestants had added their own creative twists.
Needless to say it was also a rollercoaster of emotions as some of these films made us cry, some made us laugh and some just made us smile from ear to ear. Isn't that how films should be? The TUFF Contestants had proven that you don't need a high budget to create an amazing film, but only a creative mind and a vision.
Jocelyn Ng, TUFF's Social Media Manager and Front of House, shared a heartfelt message: "As a committee member, organising this event is something that makes me very proud, especially when I met all the filmmakers and they're all so grateful for this opportunity to have their film being screened in GSC. It's also very heartwarming to see the months of preparation for TUFF finally make it."
Overall, the entire event had been awe-inspiring, it brought in aficionados, fans and practitioners from the local film community together and created many friendships between people. Most importantly, the films showcased on the night provided ample evidence that the future of the local film industry is in good hands, that there's still hope for the much maligned industry.
