Taman Paramount For Gen Z

Taman Paramount has been trending on social media for their aesthetic cafes and curated thrift stores where many teenagers or Gen Z have been seen gathering.

Reported by MalayMail, Taman Paramount is situated in the suburb part of Petaling Jaya where it was first developed in the 1960s. Before the influx of Gen Z, the area used to be deserted with just few shops such as, electrical parts store, workshops, kopitiams and other restaurants along the street. People who live nearby Taman Paramount only visit the area when they want to get their cars repaired or to grab a fast meal there but often, the stores would be closed by evening due to lack of customers.

Wong Mun Yee, 22, a regular at Taman Paramount, says, “Taman Paramount used to be an industrial area with old kopitiams and many adults would usually have a drink here with their friends. By evening, all the stalls were already closed so the area became quiet.”

Taman Paramount went from a deserted neighborhood into a lifestyle hub as aesthetic cafe businesses started to increase especially when it catered for youngsters to come and take photos for their social media. MalayMail reported one of the main reasons that Taman Paramount went viral was because of sisters, Diane and Dora Ong who quit design so they could open up their own cafe called Awesome Canteen with their group of friends.

Eight years passed, the sisters have made the biggest impact on Taman Paramount as they extended their business by launching an event space called AweGallery which hosts exhibitions and events related to art. Soon, curated vintage thrift stores came into the picture which intrigued youngsters to visit Taman Paramount so they could get secondhand items that are sold at a cheaper price.

She says, “Delc’s Retail is one of the famous thrift stores at Taman Paramount and they usually sell trendy clothes that are rare to find. That’s why many Gen Z decide to come here and do their thrifting as other stores are just basic.”

Wong visited Taman Paramount with her parents back in their industrial days when she used to live nearby. As she grew older, she only visited when they host fashion events that are open to the public and as a lover of fashion, she would take the chance to visit the booths at the event so she can support small businesses.

Recently, AweGallery hosted Jalan-Jalan Paramount at their event space and there were youth with colored-hair wearing trendy clothes gathering at one spot. With the presence of social media, it was also easier for AweGallery to promote their events and give vendors spots at their space so small businesses could get the opportunity to sell their items too.
