Swimmer Ng bagged three gold and silver medals, respectively, at the 2022 Sukma Games, a multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur from 16 to 24 September.

The Final Year student of Public Relations and Event Management said, “I feel very happy, excited, and glad because I was not expecting this result.”

The gold category was in 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, and 4 x 100 medley relay. The silver medals were for 4 x 200m free relay, 4 x 100m free relay, and 100m backstroke.

Ng’s motto is, “Don't give up easily. Do your best so that you will not regret what you did.”

Ng started swimming because of his sister, who started first. He was nine years old at the time. At 10 years old, he began participating in swimming competitions.

Ng said he used to be afraid to go to the pool, but as time passed, he started enjoying the sport.

The swimmer trains seven times a week. “My training falls on Tuesday to Sunday, with a double session on Saturday in the morning and afternoon.

"On weekdays, our training falls in the evening from 5 pm to 8 pm, and on weekends, it starts from 7.30 to 10.30 am in the morning,” the Public Relations and Event Management student said.

Furthermore, Ng hits the gym every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Through swimming, he built responsibility and independence. “As I am training as a professional athlete, I have to be disciplined. I am also a student, so I have to juggle studies and training,” he said.

Ng entered the SUKMA Games for the first time in 2018 and won one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. This year, he felt less nervous as he already knew what it felt like to compete in the game.

“This time I was more excited, and I enjoyed the sport very much.”

It was inevitable to have ups and downs in one’s career. Many of Ng’s peers retired or quit, but he was one of the few who persisted.

“Having a goal is important to lead you in the right direction.” His motivation to achieve his goal led him to work hard for it. Ng is also thankful for the support of his coaches, family, and friends.

“Good things take time, and always believe in what you are capable of doing.

“My aim for next year will be the SEA Games, and I hope to represent the country in the Olympics,” Ng said.

Ng shared a takeaway from his swimming journey. “Learn to focus on the process and not too much on the result. If you could enjoy what you do, your result will be there.”

Once again, congratulations to Terence Ng Shin Jian for winning three gold and three silver medals at the 2022 SUKMA Games!
