When Pythons Turn Malaysian Campuses and Homes into "Cold-Blooded Hunting Grounds"

Ideally, our homes and university campuses should be sanctuaries. But with increasing urbanization rapidly encroaching on the swamp and secondary forests that the reclusive reticulated python (Ular Sawa Batik) call home, with recent rains greater than the previous year thus far this August and more to come, where can these claustrophobic creatures go when there is nowhere else to get to?
Yes, firstly, into the most interconnected labyrinth (albeit underground) of drains deep below living space in human life. From underground river in Ulu Gombak to city underpasses and campus sewer (longkang) linked ancient tunnels pass that is all piped womb to megalithic beasts; When found at perfection, the Selangor Fire Department discovered a python nest in a city drain, and the mother 70-kilograms python it was curled around, weighed in vain, and full of newly hatched 28 unnaturally privatively born baby pythons all scuttling around awkwardly.
This is a creepy reminder of their presence, that athey were “nesting” in our occupied space right below our feet!

In October 2023, in a male dormitory at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Alor Gajah campus, a student unwittingly opened his door to find a one-meter-long python on his desk in horror in the early morning. With an even bigger python in a less horror-evoking toilet in Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, one homeowner heard strange noises in his bathroom and opened the door to find a 10kg, 2-metrelong python curled in his toilet. Campus canteens and dormitory kitchens have also been afflicted by endless rat invasions - to these predators, the kitchens are the perfect endless hunting ground.

As night engulfs the land, this menace reaches its zenith. Some reptiles, the python included, come in perfect “natural camouflage” patters on their bodies that are web-like in molecular structure. When motionless along school compounds walking routes, in the lanes of houses, or on the ceilings of homes, they are practically invisible until it is too late, with the victim stepping on them, provoking them to strike. Even more frightening a hazard begotten by their sheer bulk. A 5-metre python was rescued from a school drain at a primary school in Kimbang, Negeri Sembilan, by our lads from the Civil Defense Force (APM); and most recently, a lady teacher could only stare in horror when she found a python bodily suspended in mid-air, and indeed the huge mass of nearly 60 kilograms weight has sunk through her ceiling: The reticulated python will weigh upwards of 5 meters and tens of kilograms. Their muscle contractions on the body of a prey pushes the hapless victim to succumb within minutes, and students walking alone at nights or unwary citizens of the homes are an obvious target for a fatal strike.

In this urban confrontation of space, both ivory tower dweller and community maintenance manager shall have to ring the bell and set up stricter nets. For anything could break our thin wire of defense – maybe just overlooked a toilet pipe or even pool of darkness of a storm drain.
