Growing up, we witnessed the different sides of our fathers; they are the strong pillars holding our families up.
Despite the strongest blows of the wind and the scorching heat of the sun of society, our dads still stood firm.
Sure, there would be a few cracks and chips, but they always remain standing.
To celebrate and appreciate the love of all fathers around the world, Taylor’s Etc. Magazine Club hosted a Father’s Day Competition where Taylorians participated by submitting their best photo or illustration in conjunction with Father's Day.

The winners, Teh Su Mynn and Low Tze Yen, for both photography and illustration respectively, shared their inspiration behind their submissions.
“My father is a strict person. So, as I grow up, I shy away from him more and more. I don't remember when was the last time I've stood close in front of him or looked him in the eye when we communicate,” said Teh.

“In this picture I submitted, my younger brother did what I couldn't; the proximity, eye contact, and such. In a way, it's not the best representation of me and my dad but it represents what I hope to be able to do.”
Although Teh mentioned that the photo quality may not be the best, she decided to let that be to be able to show the rawness and reality of the moment, conveying the emotions she wishes her audience to witness.
“I love the play of light and shadow. The spark of warm light reveals their facial expressions and the story behind it,” said Liau Kan Man, Photography Director of Etc. Magazine Club Taylor’s.
“The photo has good style and composition, with an appropriate amount of details.”
On the other hand, Low decided to illustrate her emotions of nostalgia and happiness instead.

“This year, two of my relatives passed away unexpectedly and I started having nightmares of my parents disappearing too,” said Low.
“I wanted to stop having these fearful thoughts so I decided to face it instead by imagining what it would be like even if they are no longer with me, which led me to draw this.”
Instead of magnifying the grief and hurt of imagining the death of her parents, especially her father, she highlighted the latter to remind us that lives are meant to be celebrated.
Even if our physical bodies are no longer tangible, our memories stay ingrained in the deepest parts of our hearts.
While this heartwarming competition recently ended, not to fret as Etc. Magazine Club Taylor’s has two more competitions planned by the end of this year!
In addition, they also included special giveaways for their signature event, their 2021 magazine launch.
