In car dining service, a new trend during MCO 3.0

By Chia Yun Fei

There is a new trend coming out in Malaysia, which is dining in car services offered by restaurants, the new concept that allows diners to dine in the comfort of their own vehicles and also as a safer option other than drive-thrus.

Without any doubt, business patterns are changing rapidly everyday, business owners have to adapt their business to thrive in the new normal.

To keep business running, restaurant owners have to be creative and try any way they can think of to maintain their business, taking lessons from previous years, they found a fresh way to serve their customers, not only providing takeaway service.

As movement control order was implemented in Selangor since 6 May, restaurants are scrambling to cope with the no dine-in restrictions with offering various methods like promos, creative menu items, and free delivery.

Hence, taking away and eating in the car has been a new normal since MCO1.0 but at that time restaurants had yet to come out with the idea of meal on wheel service, which provides a table for their customer to make them enjoy their meal comfortably in their own vehicle after they made an order.

As reported by The Star, restaurant owner Jacqueline Ong noticed that there are some people eating takeaways in their cars, which sparked her “meals on wheels” idea.

“I wanted to make dining in the car a better experience and decided to serve customers in their vehicles, ’’ said Ong.

Yong Wen Xuan, 22, eager to try out their meal on wheel service of Moka Artisan Coffee after she saw their post on social media.

“I noticed that this restaurant has dining in car service with a small table on the steering wheel on social media, it’s fresh for me so I decided to give it a try and I enjoyed my spaghetti seated comfortably in my car, ’’ said Yong.

Ng Zi Chin, 22, said that she felt more secure eating in a car as there are no “other people”.

“I hope there will be more restaurants that could consider giving extra service like dining in the car, which is quite an interesting activity to do during MCO.”
