In the Digital Age, Does Print News Still Matter?

In a small cafe in Subang Jaya, newspapers are still on several tables in the morning. Some older readers are reading newspapers while drinking coffee; while young people sitting nearby look down and swipe on their mobile phones to get information through TikTok, Instagram and online news platforms.

As digital technology continues to change the way people access information, print newspapers are facing increasing challenges. When people can read news through mobile phones anytime and anywhere, a question gradually emerges: Does print news still have meaning in the digital age?

For many college students, print newspapers are no longer a part of their daily life. On the contrary, social media platforms and online news websites have become the main source of information for them.

A student of Taylor’s University HAN JIAYONG said, "I usually get news through Instagram, TikTok and news applications, because it's faster and more convenient. I can check the latest news at any time, and I don't need to buy newspapers specially.

She said, "When the newspaper was printed, I had actually seen the news on my mobile phone."

However, despite the increasing popularity of digital media, some readers still think that print newspapers have unique value.

News editor and media lecturer Dr. Aliza Shah said that the newspaper industry has undergone great changes in the past few decades.

"In the past, if the circulation of all newspapers was added up, the number could reach millions. Nowadays, this number may even be less than 100,000 copies.

She pointed out that fewer and fewer people buy print newspapers today, and one of the important reasons for this\ is that digital platforms can provide information faster.

Nevertheless, she believes that print newspapers still have some advantages that digital media cannot completely replace.

"Paper newspapers are something that can actually be touched. People can save it, collect it, and read it again in the future. The digital content is different.

She also pointed out that reading print newspapers can bring a more focused reading experience.

"When people read print newspapers, they will be exposed to more different types of news content. In contrast, on the online platform, people are easily disturbed by advertisements, notifications and other information.

She believes that paper reading can provide a less disturbing and calmer reading environment.

"Sometimes, people's eyes feel tired after using mobile phones for a long time. At this time, they may be more willing to read some content that does not need to be presented through the screen.

Although many older readers are still used to reading newspapers, more and more young people have turned to digital platforms. However, Dr. Aliza Shah believes that this problem is not only about age.

She said that newspapers themselves also need to make changes.

"Many people no longer buy newspapers because many of the news in the newspapers are no longer fresh. Readers have already seen these contents on the Internet. If newspapers want to continue to be competitive, they must provide exclusive content and high-quality reports.

She believes that instead of repeating the news that has appeared on the Internet, print newspapers should focus on in-depth analysis, investigative reports and exclusive stories to provide readers with value that online platforms cannot easily replace.

Looking forward to the future, Dr. Aliza Shah doesn't think that print newspapers will disappear completely.

"I think newspapers will continue to exist, but they will survive in a different form."

She predicts that print newspapers in the future may reduce the number of pages, but will pay more attention to the quality of content.

"In the future, the focus will no longer be on quantity, but on high-quality content."

However, she also stressed that whether print newspapers can continue to survive depends to a large extent on whether newspaper managers are willing to conform to the changes of the times.

"If managers continue to follow the past business style, the future development of print newspapers will be more difficult."

As digital media continues to dominate the information dissemination environment, the role of print newspapers is undoubtedly changing. Although fewer and fewer people read newspapers, there are still many people who attach importance to the credibility, depth and reading experience provided by traditional news.

In this era of instant information dissemination, perhaps the real question is no longer whether print newspapers can survive, but whether society still attaches importance to the value and significance represented by professional news.
