Subang Jaya, 13th July — The Kejohanan Billiard MBSJ had an exciting weekend to begin with a snap of a cue ball, a tournament that gathered Malaysia's most promising cue players. The event was organised in collaboration between Asia Club and Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) was more than just a competition but also a declaration that billiards merited a position in the Malaysia sports world.
University students and young athletes eager to show their accuracy and mental agility were drawn to the event which was held at Asia Club, The Grand SS15. The hall was full with the bustle of activity as competitors set up their shots with flawless breaks and fought through dramatic battles. Cue sports can create as much enthusiasm as any popular sport, as the applause followed each successful shot.
To change long-held beliefs about pool was one of the event's primary objectives. "MBSJ and Asia Club had put in a lot of effort, as you know those days they have a very bad impression on this kind of sports," explained the organiser. "We try our best to change their mindset, luckily they can accept it."
It was a long-awaited chance for many athletes to show off their skill, shared one of the participants, Keerthi Roshan from Inti International College. “ I think it is a big step for MBSJ to organize a billiard championship. Billiards is a sport that has many hidden talents in this country, but sadly there are no eyes to watch the youth and future stars of this country shine. Coming from a background where playing billiards is equal to breathing air, MBSJ and the Government officials of Malaysia should shine more light on billiards to boost the level of competition and players to compete with other countries in the near future.”
Keerthi also called out for more opportunities: “Based on experience, most young people are afraid of joining tournaments due to the high level of competition among pool players. Most young players need a stepping stone to encourage them to pick their cues up and play their hearts out. With friendly ranking systems they would not be afraid to take part in tournaments and would stand a fighting chance.”
The tournament also showed the potential of pool as a sport growing in popularity in China. "Due to this reason, our billiards athletes have won many medals and awards for the country in the SEA Games. With the rise of pool halls and snooker opening up in this country with an amazing atmosphere and equipment used on the world's stages it’s sure to be the next big sport among people of this nation. Keerthi continues.
The Kejohanan Billiard MBSJ was evident that the tournament had accomplished more than just choosing a winner. It motivated the next generation of Malaysia to go further by creating a new bond among players and raising awareness of a sport that is overlooked. The Malaysian pool has a bright future thanks to the support of MBSJ, Asia Club, and the growth of passionate young sportsmen.
