SUBANG JAYA: It was a melodious night filled with nostalgic movie scores as Taylor’s University Symphony Orchestra (TSO) club ushered in their 16th anniversary with a spectacular two-and-a-half hour performance that left many awed in their seats.
Held on the 12th of October in the Grand Hall on Taylor’s campus, the orchestra was led by founder and current conductor of TSO, Sunny Chew, with his team of 60 players as they presented Scene It All: Music Through the Lens.
The night began on a high note as the Marvel soundtrack filled the hall, with everyone’s eyes riveted to the players as they skilfully weaved Marvel’s classic opening sequence, Iron Man 3, and Avenger’s Endgame soundtrack as part of the first few songs of the night.
Followed by another fan favourite movie from both the young and the old, The Sound of Music, left the audience mesmerised as Edelweiss, A Few Of My Favourite Things, and Climb Every Mountain filled the screens. Followed were other familiar nostalgic hits, including the likes of Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Phantom of the Opera, and James Bond.
Conductor Sunny Chew shared about the level of dedication poured from the players into the performance, citing the ten-month preparation that took place into perfecting their performance for the anticipated day.
He also gave insight into the process of choosing this year's theme and movie scores, as the TSO committee drew inspiration from recalling their favourite movies growing up; thus, the idea for this year’s theme began to unravel.
“We encouraged them to proceed with whichever movies and songs were both nostalgic and memorable so that we may highlight them.”
“This is where I act merely as the conductor; they are the ones running the show. They are, technically, my bosses," laughed Chew.
Adele Joseph shared her excitement returning to the orchestra for the second time as a guest, as it was an event she was highly looking forward to.
“I was here last year as well, and it was a spectacular performance from the orchestra members. This year was no different; they did a phenomenal job once again. I can’t wait to see what is stored from TSO for next year," said Adele gleefully.
TSO ended the night with final scores from Pirates of the Caribbean, La La Land, and Titanic, which brought the house down as each performance earned the audience's heartiest applause.
