While acquiring a degree is no easy feat for any field, law school has earned a certain reputation for being particularly hard, earning a spot in the ‘15 Hardest Degree Subjects’ list from the Oxford Royale Academy.

Hence, Taylor’s Law Society came bearing ‘gifts’ for its members through an independently organised webinar, titled ‘How I Survived Law School and Became a Top Scorer’ .

Law students, Tan Ejin, holding a 3.74 GPA, and Nakeeran Kumar, with a 3.90 GPA, shared tips and tricks on how they became top-scorers at Taylor’s University.

The webinar on 8 September was attended by nearly 120 people, including students outside of Taylor’s Law School.

Ejin talked about the importance of maintaining a work/life balance. “I usually try to segregate my priorities with 60 to 70 per cent on academics and the rest on co-curricular activities,” she said.

Near finals week, Ejin iterated how she would make to-do lists for everything she needed to cover before finals, as well as creating a timetable for what needed to be finished to avoid ‘crying’ when slacking off.

When tackling exam essays, Ejin followed a simple system. “I think as a rule of thumb when trying to find an answer - ask yourself why and how”.

Nakeeran, on the other hand, recounted his first year at law school and all the ideals he wished he followed from the start.

“The most important, pivotal part of law school is asking for help,” he added.

He joked, “As my mother would say - It’s better to be stupid today then for the rest of your life.”

When asked on the importance of grades, Nakeeran replied, “Your grades should be your least concern; what matters is that you understand the concepts. Once you understand the concepts, the grades will come by default.”

Ejin and Nakeeran expressed how they wished they took time to enjoy law school more, urging the audience to identify a support system and spend more time with their peers.

First-year law student, Angelique Tek, shared how the past experiences of the speakers were helpful for her.

“I was able to learn that as a law student, I should allocate my time to not only my studies, but to also find myself in the process and journey as a law student.”

She added that she learned to place emphasis on character development as well, which she found were more valuable assets than the grades obtained in the end.

The webinar was the last event held for 2020/2021 term of the Taylor’s Law Society, and more information on upcoming events will be announced after a new board is announced.
