Sports clubs might be the last thing you would expect to be active during this pandemic, but Taylor’s Taekwondo Club begs to differ.
From this September until the end of December, the club will be offering virtual taekwondo classes every Monday from 7:45-9:30pm at a fee of RM10 per class.

Previously only available to Taylorians, the classes now accept public participants aged 16 and above.
The classes, which are both senior and beginner-friendly, are taught by Master Wayne Kuang, a national taekwondo proponent as well as an Appointed Senior Instructor by Taekwondo Malaysia.
A search online reveals that online martial arts classes aren’t a new concept, although it can be said that most only caught on during the pandemic.
There is also a consensus among several martial arts students that online classes do not offer the same tangible experiences that in-person classes do.
Despite the lack of physical combat, Taylor’s Taekwondo Club president Yaashinie Mathialagan said that the virtual classes will still focus on building students’ foundational sparring skills such as agility, flexibility, stamina, endurance, and speed.
Students are also recommended to have a space of at least 3 metres by 3 metres for the most optimal class experience, although training will be adjusted by the instructor depending on each student’s circumstances.
Regarding students’ mixed experience levels, Yaashinie said, “We focus on the basics for the first few classes and proceed to the common skills required by both juniors and seniors.”
Seniors are not at a disadvantage as it is required of them to have strong basics and skills require constant practice to master.”
Although technical errors and minor mentoring difficulties are inevitable, Yaashinie assured that these limitations are being managed by closely monitoring the event flow.
