KUALA LUMPUR – Dawn broke over Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens (Perdana Botanical Gardens,) as hundreds of participants gathered for the Miles with EcoBrowns Urban Walkathon. The annual event, centered on “Low-Carbon Living, Green City,” brought together walkers of all ages, volunteers, and organizers to turn environmental awareness into action – with no press coverage, fostering an intimate, community-focused atmosphere.
Conversations with participants and organizers revealed the event’s heart. “I brought my 10-year-old to show her that small acts like walking instead of driving make a difference,” shared Ms. Lina, a local resident, as she adjusted her eco-friendly event shirt. “Walking through the lake gardens’ trails reminds us how beautiful KL’s green spaces are – we need to protect them.” Organizers curated a 5km route through the botanical gardens, avoiding busy roads to minimize carbon footprint and letting walkers immerse themselves in lush greenery and fresh air.

Mr. Ahmad, event coordinator from EcoBrowns, explained the vision: “This walkathon is about building connections – between people and nature, and between communities passionate about sustainability. We wanted no press coverage to keep it genuine, so participants can focus on the cause without distractions.” The event partnered with local environmental groups to set up information booths along the route, where walkers learned about recycling, energy conservation, and sustainable eating. Volunteers distributed zero-waste goodie bags (no single-use plastics) and led group stretches at rest stops, fostering camaraderie.

Corporate sponsors supported the cause by showcasing sustainable products and pledging donations to KL’s reforestation projects. As participants crossed the finish line with smiles and shared stories, the walkathon proved that sustainability thrives on community. “Every step today is a promise to care for our planet,” Mr. Ahmad added. The Miles with EcoBrowns Urban Walkathon isn’t just a hike – it’s a movement, reminding KL that collective small actions can create lasting green change.
