There is no shortage of possible opportunities for individual growth and development at Taylor’s University.

But one program in particular stands out for the sheer number of opportunities it offers to those students who are in degree programs (with the exception of a few courses) and that is the famous SHINE program.

Through students’ involvement in extracurricular activities as well as Programme Learning Outcome (PLO) scores obtained in class, the SHINE Award programme is the journey for students towards getting an award that validates their achievements in developing and applying the 8 Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities throughout their university life.

With a fresh take on how students can make the best use of the opportunities being provided through the program, SHINE has made a comeback on capturing the attention of the student body.

Ali Moossajee, President of SHINE Ambassadors says, “The fundamental difference between this portal and the prior is that in order to claim ‘points’ under the new portal, the student must have participated in organizing the event rather than just participating in the same as an attendee.”

According to Ali, the reason why this upgrade is more holistic is because it develops students in important aspects, such as working in large teams, achieving team-oriented goals, developing time management and communication skills, all of which as future leaders are key skills to have mastered.

An additional feature of this revamped version is the fact that clubs and societies can greatly benefit by being able to get highly motivated volunteers from the student body (as students are rewarded with SHINE points for their work), instead of the EXCO members or the BOD carrying out all the event related aspects.

“The major benefit is that they don't have to overcommit their members in the planning and execution of events especially when they are all possibly swamped with uni work (which we know is the situation students like us are in 24/7),” says Ali.

“They have the opportunity to ‘outsource labour’ for their events where they are able to scale their events in ways that couldn't have been possible with a limited team.”

And as Ali puts it, “Our aim is, in simple words, to enhance Taylorians employability by providing them the platform to build and showcase their competencies in order to create future leaders who are team players.”

If that doesn’t spur us into action, this writer is not sure what will.
